Teacher video-enhanced experience
What do teachers seek, see and learn when viewing video of others ?
Although the effects of videos in teacher education and professional development upon the ability of teachers to observe and the intentions of their practice have been well documented, this is less true of their spontaneous experiences : what they seek, see and learn. Recent findings indicate that under certain identified ecological conditions, through an immersive process, video favours inquiry activity which leads to the learning of teaching actions. This has consequences on how to use video in teacher education and professional development.
Highlights
• Video experience depends on the observed activity and prior experiences resonating
• The resonance generates an inquiry activity in teaching
• Inquiry makes learning about teaching by means of video possible
• Observed actions are learnt if they respect norms of personal viability
